Lou and Patti Richards
2008 DCO Lifetime Achievement Award recipients

At its annual Blue Sky Choreographers Series, held this year at Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center, April, 11-13, Dance Coalition of Oregon recognized the outstanding achievements of Lou and Patti Richards with the DCO 2008 annual Life Time Achievement Award.

Lou and Patti were talented teachers, and professional dancers in New York and East Coast theaters. Patti appeared with such Headliners as Jackie Gleason & Tony Bennett on stage and in night clubs.

Lou worked in theatre and TV. His biggest professional thrill was working with Judy Garland at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, featuring the "Born in a Trunk" number from Judy's, "A Star in Born."

While studying with top-ranking teachers in New York, Lou also taught tap for June Taylor at her Manhattan Studio. Lou progressed from teaching to choreography and directing. He choreographed for Musical Theatre, which as a married team Lou and Patti took to with relish, traveling cross country. They consider "George M" (in the round), "Man of LaMancha," "Music Man," and "Sweet Charity," among their most successful productions, especially in the LA area. Tap dancing has a variety of forms. Lou & Patti taught Show Tap Dancing in the spirit of 1930 Movie Musicals. Their goal was to educate interested tap dancers to help preserve this style.

Teaching through the Multnomah Art Center, Lou & Patti were proud to be a part of this dance community. They inspired several generations of dancers by sharing their considerable expertise and joy of tap dancing. Lou Richards passed away, May 19 around 9 PM, in his sleep.

JULY

July 10, 11 @ 7:30 pm; July 12 @ 2:30 pm

Pivot Dance Company presents "Street Signs"

Join Portland's Pivot Dance Company as they present "Street Signs" The dance and music pieces explore the different street signs that we choose to follow. We explore the choices that we make and the roads that we decide to turn down. Some signs are warnings that we choose to ignore, other signs pave the way to wonderful experiences. Each of us takes our own path, follows our own signs. We end up getting to our destination not because we follow what others do, but because we choose our own direction.
